Shanna Swendson: Fairy Tales for Modern Times

The Union Square Market is one of my favorite things in all of Manhattan. I love the idea of being able to get farm-fresh food in the middle of a city. Even when I lived on a farm, I didn't have access to that much farm-fresh food. It makes me want to have access to a kitchen while I'm in New York so I can buy, store and cook with that food.

If I'm drawn to the market as a city girl who has spent time in the country, I can imagine the effect it would have on a country girl living in the city. That's why Katie comes to this market to ground herself after first learning the secret about magic.

I did learn after the book was written that the market isn't open on the day she visits it, but that's where I enjoy the benefits of working in a magical world. There's simply a magical market open on other days that nobody non-magical can see. I make use of that in the second book.
