As a public service, I've put together some suggested discussion questions for book groups. Caution: Spoilers for theentire series to-date (through book 3). For Enchanted, Inc.: Katie's special "power" is her ability to see what's really there -- the things that are hidden from most people. Have you ever noticed something that other people don't seem to see? Or have you later found out about something that should have been obvious that you totally missed? Which do you think would be more useful in the book's universe -- the ability to do magic or the complete immunity to it? Where would you draw the line between an "evil" spell and a "good" one? Where do you think Rod's illusion and attraction spells fall? What about the prank spell that made Jeff think he'd been turned into a frog? How are those different from the controlling spell that Idris is selling? Katie is initially disappointed to find out that she has no magic at all in her, until she learns that this could be useful. Can you think of any other traits that may initially seem to be flaws or weaknesses that might actually be assets? For Once Upon Stilettos: Katie's friends are instantly drawn to the red shoes, and later Katie herself feels compelled to buy them. That's because of the spell, of course, but have you ever been inexplicably drawn to something like a pair of shoes? The shoes give Katie an extra appeal, especially with men. Do you have an article of clothing that makes you feel that powerful or alluring? Katie's mother turns out to be immune to magic, but Katie tries to hide it from her. Was this the right choice, or should she have told her mother the truth? They try to counter the effects of the mole by doing corporate team building. Have you had any experiences with team building exercises in the real world? How effective were they really for bringing the group together, and do you think they'd have worked to overcome this kind of suspicion? Why do you think Katie didn't tell Owen right away about losing her magical immunity? For Damsel Under Stress: Would you really want a fairy godmother? Would you want one for your love life, or for some other aspect of your life? Are there times when being a workaholic is justified, like if the job is important or the stakes are high? When should work be given priority over a relationship? What do you think of the relationship between Owen and his foster parents? Do they play a positive or negative role in his life? Should Katies past behavior have been enough to clue her friends into the fact that something was wrong at the party? Do you agree with Katies decision at the end of the book? If not, how would you have resolved that issue? Do you think shes an asset or a distraction to Owen, based on what we saw? Some questions for speculation on the series: What do you think Owen's mysterious background really is? Why is Rod so insecure that he resorts to illusion spells? Will Katie and Owen be able to make a relationship work in the long term? What will the MSI team have to do to defeat Idris once and for all? Is Idris the real threat, or is he possibly working for someone else? And because I've been in a few book groups and know how they really work, I offer these real-world book group questions: Did you see this week's episode of House/Grey's Anatomy/Desperate Housewives/Lost/Heroes/The Office/Battlestar Galactica, etc.? Where did you get those shoes? What are you planning to do this weekend? |
